Can Anyone Explain Cheap Voluntourism?

No really, I’m asking. I just don’t get it when I look at Google Adwords how some companies put ads out that are $7/day, $220 for the week, etc. How does that even feed the volunteer much less help the community? And what are these price tags doing to the industry?? Anyone from those companies want to explain? I think we’re all curious.

See below.

Not me. My non-profit organization charges about $700 a month and we struggle to get by on that.

There must be additional charges when you arrive in country. $7 a day is just impossible.

  2. Well, there are many programs that charge absolutely nothing. These programs get their funds elsewhere and generally want the volunteers for the work they do, not the fundraising they will do beforehand.

No where above do the ads say, “We will pick you up at the airport and feed you”.

  3. Thanks Claire but here on their website is what is included in that price and they are not a non-profit so don’t get funding from elsewhere? Not trying to pick on these guys just trying to understand how you can cover all of the below and still act responsibly to your volunteers and communities.

“24/7 support from staff, program marketing costs, information pack, administration costs, travel costs to inspect programs and communication costs with volunteers. Program Fee – Airport pick up, orientation, t-shirt, program supervision, accommodation and meals during volunteer placement period, In-country 24/7 volunteer support and In-country administration costs.”

  4. A lot of times, it just comes down to “you get what you pay for”. For example, though the company may say they offer accommodations, the kind of they offer can vary greatly. Also, it’s true that organizations can get help or money from other companies or groups on the ground; being a non-profit doesn’t necessarily conflict with that. Some more information on the costs of volunteering overseas can be found here:
