There are so many sites wanting your advertising dollars lately, it seems every week I get a call from a ‘new and innovative’ web portal. The two main portals directly aimed at voluntourism though are still GoOverseas.com
(let’s take Google out of this)
I think comparing a site based on unique visitors/ number of advertisers/ leads is tough. I think a qualitative comparison is also necessary. What site do you think is best for what the user is looking for? What site is easier to navigate? Who has the best information? Who has useful information about all programs (regardless of whether or not they are a paid advertiser)? Who interacts better with their users?
Here are some stats for you from the sites themselves to help you make a decision. I copy and pasted what the sites sent me VERBATIM so the below is what they say about themselves NOT my personal opinions. I also asked VolunteerAbroad.com, TransitionsAbroad.com and Idealist.org the same questions but never got a reply.
GoOverseas.com was started with the simple idea of creating a centralized website to provide the resources required for meaningful travel abroad. That idea has grown and expanded into what you see here, a community driven website of like minded people who are all passionate about teaching, studying and volunteering abroad. GoOverseas.com features a popular ‘Help Me Find a Program’ forum where users regularly discuss a wide range of travel topics, and a blog community where we have brought together a wealth of overseas travel experiences. We also regularly post insightful articles to help expand the community’s knowledge about opportunities to travel abroad. Please join us in our mission to build a great online community for any and all people interested in meaningful travel abroad!
Go Overseas was started with the idea of creating a centralized database for internet users to easily find information to travel abroad. Clear and simple, our goal is to connect the right users with quality programs from all over the world. We share the belief that overseas travel is a worthwhile endeavor and are committed to provide teach, study, volunteer, and internship programs with the means to reach their targeted audience.
Why Advertise with GoOverseas
We have worked hard to establish credibility in the online community and drive quality traffic to our site. This has been and will continue to be our primary mission. We have done this by creating excellent content that is relevant to all users interested in travel abroad and further enhanced by the ability of the community to share their own thoughts in our forums, blogs and comments. We want our users to be able to ask questions and receive insightful answers in order to make the experience of going overseas an enjoyable one.
We have developed a proven and successful system to reach out and interact with our audience. Behind the site we have employed the best Search Engine Optimization (SEO) practices to make sure that our content consistently appears in the top search rankings. Our content is also syndicated and appears on blogs and websites across the internet.
Around 300K visitors/month and over 100 advertisers on the site.
**Our social media communities (Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, etc.) encompasses more than 50,000 world travelers
**The GoAbroad Newsletter is sent to over 130,000 active subscribers – and by active, we mean that we track who is opening and clicking on content
**We target all sorts of travelers from around the world. Obviously, study abroad is quite popular with 18-25 year olds (college age students) but we also appeal to those who are a bit older and looking to go abroad and volunteer, intern, teach, etc.
**What makes us unique is how we are one of the most comprehensive directories out there. There is rich media content included on many of the listings, the traffic is quality, the ads for clients are subtle and structured to get travelers interested in exploring the site. It’s also FREE to list your program on GoAbroad, and we have a verification system in place to make sure listings are legitimate organizations.
**We participate in real-world outreach by sending GoAbroad reps to table at study abroad fairs and conferences
**The site itself is designed to appeal to what users want – thus leading to the quality leads – and we also recently gave the site a refreshed update, enhancing the user interface and experience. This move is part of a bigger re-design process that will be taking place over the next 6 to 8 months.
**In addition to being a directory, GoAbroad has another branch known as GoMedia
, which are a suite of online marketing products. Offering everything from social media management to website design, and an entire blogging network, these products were designed by a team consisting of experts, not only in website maximization, but education abroad and the trends in both markets.
**We have over 1.1 million world travelers to the site each month; there are over 28,000 programs listed and updated on GoAbroad, and over 2,000 advertisers (clients)
And I have been told the owner of GoAbroad owns or has an interest in the below companies, this has some people riled about creating competition between sites. In theory an advertising investment by a company into GoAbroad could then be used to create a competitive brand or site.
SAE Barcelona (not 100% sure about this one)
